Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) Cable
Distribution Network Operator Scottish & Southern Energy (SSE) operates and maintains the power lines, substations and transmission equipment supplying 740,000 homes in Scotland and over 2.9 million homes across central southern England. Their network includes over 130,000km of overhead line wires and buried cable and more than 106,000 electricity substations. Specific DNO-approved cables are required for connections to the National Grid, with 'household' electricity suppliers paying the regional DNO to use the transmission network.
SSE 11kV & 33kV Cable Specification
For buried cables, the 11kV and 33 kV cables are tightly controlled under the SSE specification - with custom sized screen cross-sectional sizes. The 11kV cables for three-phase power distribution are in single cores or 3-core configurations (unlike UKPN and ENW who solely specify single core triplex formation). The 33kV are single core cables. All three cable types and voltages are sheathed in a Medium Density Polyethylene to provide a robust, abrasion and tear-resistant barrier for cable duct installations.
