HD620 Standard Cable
Harmonisation Document HD620 relates to medium voltage power distribution cables with extruded insulation, with a rated voltage between 3.6/6 (7.2)kV and 20.8/36 (42)kV.
This harmonisation document's latest iteration, S3, was released by CENELEC and ratified by the country members in 2023.
It’s commonly linked to German Standard DIN VDE 0276 Part 620, as well as having national adoption references such as UNE-HD 620 in Spain, NEN-HD 620 in the Netherlands, CEI-HD 620 in Italy, and DS-HD 620 in Denmark.
HD620 Standard Cable Construction
HD 620 standard references may be listed alongside IEC 60502-2 on many medium voltage cable datasheets. A series of tests laid out in the standard - over and above those of IEC 60502-2 - are required for compliance. The method of compliance for these measurements is set out in the test methodology for HD 605 subclause 2.1.1 (insulation material) and, unless otherwise specified in the particular section of HD 620, HD 605 subclause 2.1.2 (sheath material).
Both HD 620 and IEC 60502-2 have compulsory conductor and insulation screening, often applied in a triple extrusion process with the insulation layer itself with the exception of cables with EPR and HEPR insulation which are compulsory for voltages above 3.6/6 (7.2)kV.
HD 620 Part 1 covers general requirements applicable to the entire range of cables (unless otherwise specified). Subsequent Parts look specifically at the insulation materials used :
HD620 Part 9 relates to HEPR (Hard Grade Ethylene Propylene Rubber) insulated single-core cables and single-core pre-assembled cables.
HD620 Part 10 is for XLPE (Cross-linked Polyethylene) insulated single core and 3 core cables, and again single-core pre-assembled cables.
And HD620 Part 11 is for EPR (Ethylene Propylene Rubber) insulated single core and 3-core cables.
Each Part is then further broken down into sub-sections to refer more specifically to the cable construction and materials used.
HD 620 Part 2, 3 and 4 are currently spare having been previously withdrawn, whilst HD 620 Parts 5 & 6 have been consolidated into Part 10 XLPE, and HD 620 Part 7 & 8 now combine to form Part 11 EPR.
