REACH Compliance for Electrical Cables

The Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH for short) is a European Directive enacting strict regulations on chemical substances. The phased implementation of this complex law runs through to 2018 and is overseen by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA).

REACH requires organisations to register chemicals imported into the European Union with the ECHA. Applying to imports weighing 100 tonnes from 2013 to 2017, this requirement has been set to apply to imports weighing 1 tonne from 2018 onwards. The list of registered substances is extensive and includes toxic chemicals such as phthalates and brominated flame retardants. Further restrictions apply on SVHC or substances of very high concern.
The purposes of the REACH Directive is to ensure that through the length of the supply chain, all parties are aware of the health and environmental implications of the products they use. The aim of harmonising the treatment of these toxic substances across the European Union gives clarity on the obligations on manufacturers and suppliers. Eland Cables is actively engaged in making our cables and accessories are REACH compliant, as well as meeting the requirements of other legislation such as the RoHS Directive. The tracking, monitoring and reporting of these substances forms a part of our ISO 14001 Environmental Certification, helping us to achieve supply chain practices that are in the best interests of the world around us.
